Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We have answers.
Does needling cause Pain?
Acupuncture is generally not considered painful, but the experience can vary from person to person. The needles used in acupuncture are very thin, much finer than those used for injections, so the discomfort is usually minimal. If you experience significant pain or discomfort, let your acupuncturist know immediately so they can adjust the needles or technique.
What should patients expect to feel during the treatment session?
Most people feel a slight sensation when the needle is inserted, which might be described as tingling, warmth, or a dull ache, while some find the treatment relaxing and others may experience a mild sensation of heaviness or pressure around the needle sites.
What are the potential side effects of acupuncture?
Acupuncture side effects are usually mild and temporary, including soreness or bruising at needle sites, fatigue, dizziness, emotional release, and occasionally a temporary worsening of symptoms. These effects typically resolve quickly. If you have concerns, consult your acupuncturist.
Pneumothorax, is a rare side effect of acupuncture, can occur if needles are inserted too deeply into the chest or upper back. Symptoms include chest pain and rapid breathing. If you experience these symptoms, go to the emergency room immediately. This risk is very low when performed by an experienced acupuncturist using proper techniques
Do you use additional techniques to help relieve pain?
Yes, additional techniques like cupping and Gua Sha may be incorporated based on the treatment plan.
Is an infrared heat lamp used during the treatment?
Infrared heat lamps offer benefits such as pain relief, improved circulation, muscle relaxation, detoxification, enhanced skin health, reduced inflammation, and faster healing. These effects make them useful in therapeutic treatments like acupuncture and physical therapy.
Why are different angles used during needle insertion?
It depends on the location of the needle insertion. For example, on the chest, needles are inserted at an oblique angle to help prevent the risk of pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
